The Brief, Madcap Life of Kay Kendall
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Kentucky (September, 2002)
Authors: Eve Golden and Kim Elizabeth Kendall
Average review score:

Anything but a delight...the book, not the subject
After waiting years for a bio about the magnificent Kay Kendall, Eve Golden's effort is little more than tin. The book is a laundry list of Kendall's personality quirks and defects (film stars documented as self-centered is a revelation?) and completely misses the mark. Kendall was so extraordinary and special as an actress, and this book, tragically, misses that which clearly made her so memorable. Several of Kendall's films are watchable only due to her presence and there is no mention of that here. Golden has chosen to focus on the personal details at the expense of Kendall's charm and uniqueness as a performer. It seems that cooperation of Kendall's sister, Kim, was necessary to provide documentation about their childhood and early careers, however, this doesn't seem to have helped the book much. Previous bios on Rex Harrison have better captured the essence of Kendall's star quality (i.e. Alexander Walker's). Noel Coward's diary entry for Kendall's London stage performance in THE BRIGHT ONE does more to illuminate this great actress than this book: "Went to see a dreadful play in which Kay Kendall was enchanting..." THAT was Kendall's gift. This book does nothing to endorse that consensus.

Utterly fantastic - in true Golden style.
This is Eve Golden's best book yet, and that's saying a lot. While many Americans are unaware of Kay Kendall's short, but significant, career, Ms. Kendall's popularity over the pond remains unwavering. Her life story is told in a style true to Kendall's off-screen persona: funny, witty, sharp, and always interesting. As the subject matter could have ended up a cliched tearjerker with Kendall's death, Golden instead takes the high road. Highly recommended for any fan or Kendall's, Golden's, or movies in general.

The Divine Kay
This was a book I eagerly anticipated and I was not let down. Entertaining show biz author Eve Golden weaves a fun story around show business's most glamorous comedienne. From day one, Kay Kendall lived a fast-paced, fun-filled life, mixed with a semi-successful career filled with interesting and witty friends.
As the world knows, Kay Kendall's life was cut short following a losing battle with leukemia, a disease everyone swears she never knew she had. Her marriage to Rex Harrison is honestly told and the author manages to bring Kay's story to print in a slender volume that is filled with reminiscences from family and friends.
A fun read, a delightful tribute to the Divine Kay.

Once Saved Always Saved (New Westiminster Pulpit)
Published in Hardcover by Erdman's Pub (July, 2002)
Author: R. T. Kendall
Average review score:

What a joke!
Yes God gives us the gift to be saved but we can lose our salvation! It's like someone gives you a gift and you accept it, but its up to you how to take care of the gift. Some ruin it, some take good care of it, and some lose it only to recover it later on in their lives. People who believe in "once saved always saved" doctrine are living in delusion. That doctrine basically says that you are entitled to go to heaven, no matter what you do on earth! What a spoiled attitude! People who actually read their bibles (KJV) find the truth! Apostle Paul said "work at your salvation with fear and trembling".

He shall lose none...
The below reviewer obviously does not agree with Jesus that He should lose none that the father gave Him (John 6:39- And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.) and that none shall be able to pluck His out of His hand ( John 10:28- And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.) Was Jesus not telling the truth?

Once Saved, Always Saved
This book was definitely a highlight of my Christian experience. What a freedom to understand what God's grace really is--and is not, i.e., freedom to know God, not freedom to sin. This presentation of the Gospel walks right down the middle of Calvinism and Arminianism and sets the captive free--free to rest in God's unmerited favor, freely given, never to be taken away. Who wouldn't want to know and love and serve a God like that? Thank you, R.T. Kendall, for this wonderful book! I hope they reprint it soon!

Hunter of My Heart (Harlequin Historical, No. 460)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (May, 1999)
Author: Janet Kendall
Average review score:

Stupid
1. The "arranged marriage" theme has gotten hackneyed. I thought western civilization prided itself on free marriages but the theme of the girl and guy getting married and falling in love AFTER is more common than you would expect. 2. The "love scenes" make me cringe. Sabrina is always resisting and Hunter is always the hormone-charged teenage boy. 3. Not much creativity is shown. The same ol' "sir" and "lord" calling stuff characteristic in Regency stuff, it's ok but it can get annoying after awhile. 4. STUPID, STUPID 2-dimensional characterization. For instance, Hunter is for the abolition cause. The issue is not important, the issue is why on earth is Hunter interested in this cause? Who gives a d@mn! Now, we know the abolition cause is a politcally correct position and hence the author has made Hunter be politically correct so he appeals more to us. As for Sabrina, I am so sick and tired of "heroines" who act stuck up and go on showing off something like "I can speak eight languages" or "I read Shakespeare". Sheesh, it seems as though the author likes to make fun of feminists. By the way, why does Sabrina support the women's cause too? All the good characters hasve to be politically correct of course!

Some good parts include one scene when Hunter is teasing Sabrina. Hunter is like this romantic figure that appears a lot in this genre. He is tough, good looking, but he is a total whim. He drinks, but he's NEVER an alcoholic, in asccordance with the brooding romantic figure. Hmph!

An okay book
This was hardly the worst book I've ever read - but nothing really sets it apart from others in its genre.

Hunter Sinclaire is a pretty good hero - lots of internal torment and a pretty interesting secret.

Sabrina Barrington is a pretty good heroine. Pretty feisty - with her own secret agenda.

Unfortunately, that's the best I can say about this book. There were too many side characters, too many issues, and too many secrets.

The dialogue was okay. The romance okay. In my opinion, it wasn't a bad book. But it's not going to stay on my keeper shelf, either.

It was one of the best books I have ever read!!!
"The Hunter of My Heart" is one of the most heart touching books I have ever read. It was so good I never wanted to put it down. You'll laugh, cry, and feel all the emotions just like the characters do. It is a great book!!! Once I was finished reading I felt like i lost my best friend. I was very disappointed to see the end come. Hunter Sinclair is someone who you would wish was real.

Jump Start Your Online Job Search in a Weekend
Published in Paperback by Premier Press (April, 2000)
Author: Pat Kendall
Average review score:

No support!
The book is well written and organized. However, the software that came with the book (one of the main reasons I ordered the book) was difficult to use and had little to no support. I am a software engineer and could not get some of the programs to run after installation. Also, the websites that were listed for troubleshooting help were no longer valid.

My #1 Pick for Online Job-Search
As the author of a book on resume writing and president of a firm that specializes in job search services, I am always looking for good resources to add to my library and to recommend to clients. "Jump Start" is my #1 pick for online job-search.

For many job seekers, the prospect of online job search can be daunting. JumpStart Your Online Job Search takes the "daunts" and doubts out of the process! I love the way Pat has taken the "hugeness" of the Internet and broken it down into manageable pieces. I found her ideas for researching jobs and developing keyword lists to be sound advice (I learned some great little tricks myself!).

Especially helpful is the CD that comes with the book (contents are also printed in the appendices) AND her companion sites: where job seekers can get current job-search links and develop a Web resume (the process is fully automated -- you don't have to know a line of HTML!).

Pat was one of the first in the job-search industry to recognize the possibilities of the Internet and has been online since the mid-1990's . . . cumulatively, her thousands of hours online shine throughout this book. It's a must-read for anyone who wants to master the maze of the Internet!

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance Official Strategy Guide
Published in Paperback by Brady Games (21 November, 2002)
Authors: Bon Cureton, Paul Edwards, Omar Kendall, Ben Cureton, and Midway Games
Average review score:

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance? -Good. This guide? -Not.
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance is probably the best fighting game out there. However, when I bought the guide, I realized that it was exactly the same info that could be found in the character's Konquest mode, and by pausing any game and bringing up the character's moves. The guide only adds a few combos, and it never covers any character's fighting styles very well.

For instance, looking at Johnny Cage, even though it says "he works very well in all of his fighting styles," they only go into small detail on Jeet Kune Do. With Shang Tsung, they only really explain two of his fighting styles. No matter the character, the guide actually tells the player to stay in one fighting style! This is extremely boring, and a bad idea, considering the fact that each style has some merit. It's obvious when you read it that the author didn't spend a whole lot of time with most of the characters. After reading storylines like Johnny Cage's, which explains he never died in the MK storyline, only in one of his movies (this was done to quiet some fan-boys [mad] that he was still around. Next up should be explaining to them that Scorpion's been dead in every game...), the author still says something about him being ressurrected (for this game), again. This is one of the many, many over-sights in the guide, and it shows the author's over-looking of details.

When you play MK:DA, each character has three different fighting styles, usually 2 hand-to-hand styles and one weapon style. The fun is switching between them to confuse your opponent, and accessing the different moves in each style. Where this guide fails is describing each style's strengths and weaknesses. The guide only touches on select styles, and usually doesn't give enough info on these. If the guide would've had a few more pages per character, this might have fixed the problem. As it stands, the guide is almost useless. It promises on the back to reveal "Krypt secrets," but no, you have to buy a seperate, "Krypt Pocket Kodes" book to find out what's in the Krypt--the book doesn't even touch on it, therefore lying to the potential customer. (The Krypt is a huge "graveyard" which allows a player to sapend earning "Koins" from battle on the 675 or so "koffins" in the game, which contain secrets like alternate costumes, hidden characters like Kitana and Reptile, etc.)

After all is said and done, this guide doesn't really cover anything that isn't already available in the game, but it does make this info readily available. For hardcore MK fans, or people who hate pausing the game constantly only, otherwise it's pretty worthless.

MK - MORE KNOWLEDGE
I used to love the old MK pocket guides and was a little disappointed when they went the way of the 8 track tape. After picking up the new MK/DA strategy guide by BradyGames, I can see why this one in particular wasn't a pocket-sized guide. It would have been the size of a Stephen King paperback (and the full size, full color artwork would have been reduced to a CD cover). BG has crammed everything you could think of and more in this wonderful guidebook. It's broken down into how to use the guide; terms of kombat; kombat basics (for XB, GC, and PS2); fighting styles (each character has 3); konquest; kombatants (available, unlockable, and secret); chronology of MK (shouldn't that be kronology or something?); a 20 page art gallery (don't worry though, as all 144 pages are covered with cool art work); 4 pages for the Krypt; and kombat trivia (with answers). Even though I was about halfway through the game, I still had to add this awesome book to my MK collection. Who knows, I might need it down the stretch.

Sociology in Our Times (with InfoTrac): The Essentials
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (11 November, 1997)
Author: Diana Kendall
Average review score:

Sociology in our times
this book is very board. it doesn't discuss things in details. Personally, I don't like this kind of book. I would rather get a psychology than this.

One of the better Sociology Textbooks
There are a number of good sociology textbooks available, and one can choose almost any of them with confidence. However, this is definitely one of the best. It is accessible, yet the author does not talk down to the student. The illustrations are pertinent and timely. The choice of topics is comprehensive. It is a broad-ranging textbook, yet, at the same time, is focused and direct.

The instructor who chooses to use Sociology in Our Times can be comfortable with the choice. The student who is fortunate enough to have a teacher who chose Sociology in Our Times should be confident that they have had a good exposure to Sociology. If one learns the material in this book they will be well-grounded in Sociology.

Systems Analysis & Design
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall College Div (December, 2002)
Authors: Kenneth E. Kendall and Julie E. Kendall
Average review score:

Doesn't Teach Much
I used this book in my systems analysis and design course. First off, it is over priced. I understand that college books are expensive, but this one was too overpriced.

Second, it is not helpful. It spends chapters talking about how to get information from users. Did I really need several chapters to tell me to interview them, send out surveys, and observe them? That is kind of obvious information.

Following this course, I took a software development course. The two classes are in series. Techniques learned from this book did not help me. When it came time to write documents (project proposals, documents for external design and internal design phases, etc.) this book was no help. There were no examples of what should be in them.

Not helpful unless you are clueless as to where to begin. Even then it's not a tremendous help.

Comprehensive but pricey
The text covers the topic with ample examples and diagrams, plus cases short and long. The level of detail is appropriate for a graduate level course. The book is too ... The authors could eliminate the chapter on the office environment. They should condense the chapters on questionnaires and system presentation. Another solution: put the lengthy end-of-chapter case material on a CD; it is doubtful that all of it is used in any course. Perhaps the authors have too much clout to be edited.

Everything you ever wanted to know, and then some...
The Kendalls have definitely created a comprehensive book on systems analysis. Virtually every aspect is covered here, and in plenty of detail. There are plenty of review questions and problems, hypothetical consulting situations, an ongoing case-study, and even an associated web-based case study.

While being well written, I feel that this text may be a bit overdone. Most sections are longer than neccessary, over-explaining fairly obvious concepts. So although the reader can never complain about being short-changed, I would be amazed if any reader needed ALL of the explanations to understand what was being discussed.

I have also noticed a few cases of dated information creeping through from previous editions. One example is a discussion on groupware that talks about features of Windows for Workgroups and Windows NT, and mentions the 'upcoming' Chicago release. Chicago was the working name for Windows 95, which was hardly 'upcoming' for a text published in 1999.

It feels as if the Kendalls have been adding new information to their revised editions, but not revising thoroughly enough to remove old or out of date references. If a really good job of revision was done here, I think this text could be reduced by at least a hundred pages or so without any real loss of useful content.

Since it emphasises practice more than theory, it may not appeal to all types, but for anyone who needs to know HOW to be a systems analyst, this is probably the book to read.

Getting Married in Korea: Of Gender, Morality, and Modernity
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (May, 1996)
Author: Laurel Kendall
Average review score:

the most boring book i read in a really interesting class
Getting Married in Korea was one of the 3 books my Cultural Antro professor mandated us to read. The book is excruciatingly boring. Unlike his other reading assignments, I couldnt see myself pass the first chapter (or even the first page!). Fortunately, I finished the book in a month. (woohooo). The content was in detail and the book with only few graphics. i thought it could have been better if the author stuck more pictures in their to at least entertain the reader while reading!

interesting case study in sociology, not Korean culture
this book is not for someone who would be interested into a systematic and quick introduction to Korean wedding customs.

The elements presented are of the case study type, showing the evolutions over time of a Korean family sampled for a PhD thesis. interesting for another scholarly work, it isn't so much for someone interested in understanding Korean marriage customs. Bits and pieces can be collected and summarised by oneself. This book is about "sociology", not "culture" per se.

Getting Married in Korea
This is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to learn more about Korean culture in general or is looking for info spacifically on weddings. It is easy to read and understand the concepts. Despite being packed with information, the book does not overwhelm.

Van Gogh in Space: Infinity City - Book 1
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (January, 2001)
Author: Douglas Kendall
Average review score:

My God, it's been published?
Doug Kendall used to post on Usenet (on rec.arts.sf.written), under the name of Doug Bell, about his "amazing" story, "VAN GOGH IN SPACE ! ! !" . I had the misfortune to actually read some of its turgid prose.

On the positive side, he did have a vague idea of how to string some words together, and managed to avoid the more horrific spelling and grammatical errors generally associated with self-promoted, self-published material.

However, the overall writing (worsened by the strident and repeated promotion of the "virtues" of this book) was at a level which would have made the young John W. Campbell blush. One of the most important lessons in writing is "show, don't tell", and it was clear that Doug Bell/Kendall didn't know it, or if he did, never learned what it meant.

It DID earn him a small place in Usenet history on the Net.Loons list.

It is interesting that there's two positive reviews -- very positive -- for this particular book. Oddly enough, Doug used to post his promos with purported positive reviews from other readers (positive reviews which never changed over the years). Whether any of these supposed readers actually existed outside of Doug's mind, we never found out. I find it hard to believe, but then, there's people who like The Phantom Menace, too, so there's no accounting for taste.

'VAN GOGH IN SPACE'
Hi, this book was written in the time frame during the Desert Storm War. This book branches out into the unknown world/s of the event horizon, and black holes. The imagination is grasped here in this tale to start off a series of adventures. Lots of fun reading, goes fast, and leaves you hungry for more.

VAN GOGH IN SPACE - Good start to a great series!
This is an entertaining book. It must be the author's first book because the next books are written much better. ;-) It's cool seeing VINCENT VAN GOGH come back to life. Pretty entertaining book and I recommend it. I've told my friends. My wife likes it!

I've read the first 3 books in the INFINITY CITY series and they're way fun. Each book has characters from the previous books and that's fun. The way the characters deal with the endless science fiction problems the author throws at them is inspiring! There's humor, I love a little humor in a book.

I emailed the author and he's got more in the series that will soon be in print.

I recommend this book because it's the first of an entertaining series. I intend to read each one!

(I would have rated it 4 stars, but I gave it 5 because it's the start of such a cool series!)

The Yugoslav Auschwitz and the Vatican: The Croatian Massacre of the Serbs During World War II
Published in Hardcover by Prometheus Books (July, 1992)
Authors: Vladimir Dedijer and Harvey L. Kendall
Average review score:

Typical Serbian Propaganda and Orthodox Ideology
After reading it not once but twice to figure out what the author was trying to focus on. I came to conclusion that its a typical Serbian Propaganda tool. Most of the facts have been altered and if you pay attention the number of Serbian victims stated in this book grows larger and larger as the reading goes on. The book is a compilation of fictional facts that were developed in former Yugoslavia durring the 50's and 60's in the height of Communisit rule. Durring the last 10 years the issues revolving around Jasenovac have come to light. Serbian photo editing of archives and the stories that were written about this matter have been uncovered and have come to be falsifications. This book is just a tool of the Serbs to fuel a hatred of Croatia and Bosnia peoples durring the 70's that lead to the wars in the 90's. Its hard to stomach bad history writing and propaganda that is stated in his book. I hope that the Serbian people could finaly realize the truth about this matter and realize the 700,000 victims is well exagerated and that the mixture of religous and political propaganada is not a good tool to use. Any person killed over nationality or religions is wrong also using peoples death to benifit your interest is also wrong. The 65,000 Serbians killed in Jasenovac is not condoned or justified but in no means close to the numbers stated in his book.
Hopefully the Serbian People will finally admit the Massacre of hundreds and thousands of Croats after the Second World War. Maybe Vladimir should research that topic.

The Yugoslav Auschwitz and the Vatican
This is an important book for everyone to read, but especially for Catholics. After all, this is not something you will learn in CCD. Truth always has the ability to shine in the light, and expose the darkness of lies, hatred, and murder. As a baptized Byzantine Catholic, graduate student, and lover of truth, history, and philosophy this book receives my highest recommendation. Read the book, check out the references, follow the research, and by all means prove the facts for yourself. Heed this warning, "By their fruit you will recognize them. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit." Matt. 7:18. As a follow-up to this book, I would also recommend Avro Manhattan's "The Vatican's Holocaust". The evidence is strong and history records the truth. Do you really think God cares if it was 1,000,000, 700,000 or 350,000 that were murdered in the name of religion? Every single victim was loved by God. A Roman Catholic attempted cover-up will not work. Judgement Day is coming. Don't be left in the dark, "The Yugoslave Aushcwitz and the Vatican" deserves five big stars!

Revealing
I always had an idea of the forces at work during WWII, but not to this level of detail. WWII buff will love it!
